Celebrating 30 Years of Engineering Excellence at Newcastle Engineering

Let's get started
We'd love to hear from you

May 2025 marked a significant milestone for Newcastle Engineering — our 30th anniversary.

Three decades ago, Newcastle Engineering was founded with a clear mission: to become a trusted source of advice, creativity and knowledge of market-leading engineering services and solutions for our clients.

Today, we’re proud to reflect on our journey, celebrate how far we’ve come, and look forward to the exciting road ahead.

Providing Simple Solutions to Complex Problems Since 1995

From humble beginnings, Newcastle Engineering has grown into a trusted name in the civil engineering landscape on Vancouver Island. Over the years, we’ve undertaken complex projects across a diverse range of industries—for both private developers and local municipalities.

Our success has always been driven by our people — a dedicated team of engineers, designers, project managers, and support staff who bring passion, skill, and creativity to everything we do. Together, we’ve built a reputation for delivering reliable, tailor-made solutions that stand the test of time.

What Our Team Says

We wanted to take a moment to share some candid thoughts from our team, as we asked them a couple of questions about their experience being part of the Newcastle Engineering crew. Here’s what they had to say:

What was your first impression when you joined Newcastle?

Teri: It was 2008, and what I saw was a small, close-knit family. The management team frequently lunched together, everyone had silly nicknames, and there was always laughter in the office. I wanted to become a part of it. I have told people over and over again that my job at Newcastle is the best job I have ever had. My worst day at Newcastle is still so much better than many of the jobs I held before.

Brayden: I was early in my career, but was surprised at the small size compared to how well-known Newcastle was.

Kailen: It felt like a hard-working environment with experienced professionals.

Drew: It was a great group of guys with tons of experience, and such an amazing place to develop my engineering skills!

What has been your favourite project and why?

Nathan: OceanWest. The location and terrain made it challenging, but also very rewarding once complete.

Brayden: Harewood Mines Road – Directional drilling for a sanitary sewer extension below the parkway was a challenge, but it felt great to get it right.

Dan: Ocean View Terraces. It is the most difficult grading design I have done to date, and it was rewarding to have the project come together and be completed.

Kailen: Malone Road Subdivision. Challenging grading. Challenging servicing and intricate lot grading.

Drew: Too many to choose from. I tend to like the challenging sites where it takes a team of consultants working together to come up with a vision for the property, and then find a technical solution to enable construction to be feasible.

How has the company’s vision changed since you joined, and what excites you about its future?

Teri: For many years, it was the choice of the leaders to keep the company small so they could focus on exceptional service and client care. The choice to grow was decided upon with an injection of young blood, eager to see if Newcastle might have a shot at competing with the big players. Just seeing the massive changes that have occurred over the last few short years, the thought of what the future holds is almost too much to imagine.

Brayden: We went from being solely Nanaimo-based to serving the entire island (even off-island). I’m excited to see how the firm will continue to grow.

Nathan: The company has changed from 12 people with no plans to grow, to now 28 people with expansion plans for different regions and service offerings.

Kailen: Newcastle is now targeting work all across Vancouver Island with plans for new offices in different locations. This is a big change from previously only focusing on work in town.

Drew: The main change has been the desire to grow the company to put us in a position to take on larger projects. I think that it aligns with the goal to build projects that benefit our communities, as we can take a larger role in the growth of the community.

Highlights From Our Journey

We’ve had the privilege of working on hundreds of projects that have pushed boundaries and delivered real value to our clients. Some of our proudest moments include:

We could go on, but there are too many highlights to list… We’re extremely grateful for the community we’ve built here on the island, not just with our clients but with the architects, consultants and engineers who help us complete projects to the highest standards.

What’s Next for Newcastle Engineering?

We have some exciting plans ahead that we can’t quite discuss yet. But in the meantime, we’re staying true to our commitment to our clients as we grow our team and expand our reach.

To wrap things up, we’d like to once again extend a heartfelt thank you to our clients, our team and the community for being a part of this 30-year journey together, which, in the grand scheme of things, is just the beginning…
