To support our continued growth, we have opened a new office in Courtenay, BC, and we are looking for an experienced Civil Engineer to lead our team of 3. This is an exceptional opportunity for an intermediate to senior level engineer ready to take the next step in their career, combining technical excellence with leadership and mentorship.
You will be the driving force behind our Courtenay operations, leading and organizing engineering projects from start to finish while developing your team. You will coordinate staff resources to perform design work according to established guidelines and standards, manage clients and project stakeholders, and serve as Engineer of Record on projects within your expertise.
- Lead and organize civil engineering projects from conception to completion, focusing on land development, municipal infrastructure, and construction projects
- Perform engineering design work including road design, sanitary sewer design, water main design, and associated calculations
- Serve as Engineer of Record and sign and seal Engineering Design Drawings and reports completed under your direct supervision
- Supervise and review the design process and calculations of your 3-person team to ensure accuracy, completeness, and adherence to current standards
- Coach, mentor, and train team members including Engineers in Training (EITs), guiding them toward their P.Eng. designation
- Manage project financial aspects and provide oversight across multiple projects, ensuring efficient expenditure of allocated funds
- Maintain project design files with all necessary calculations and supporting documentation
- Provide concept and peer reviews of engineering designs
- Develop and maintain thorough knowledge of legislation, codes, and procedures relating to engineering design
- Build and nurture relationships with clients and create a strong, positive external profile for Newcastle in the Courtenay community
- Create estimates and review proposals for new work
- Ensure all work meets or exceeds Newcastle’s standards for excellence
Pay: $120,000 to $150,000 annually with bonus potential, a comprehensive group benefits program, including an employer-funded group RRSP, four weeks vacation and additional personal time off that we call “Newcastle Days”.
- Bachelor’s degree in applied science, engineering, or a relevant field
- Registered as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with Engineers and Geoscientists BC
- Minimum 10 years of experience in the civil engineering industry
- Strong background in land development, subdivisions, and multi-family residential projects
- Team management experience with 2-10 direct reports, including demonstrated ability to mentor and develop engineering staff
- Proven proposal writing skills and ability to create compelling project estimates
- Excellent client management skills with a track record of building and maintaining strong relationships
- Strong track record of efficient project delivery and meeting deadlines
- Experience with AutoCAD Civil 3D and Microsoft 365
- Advanced communication skills with the ability to explain complex engineering concepts to clients, team members, and stakeholders
- Strong problem-solving abilities and capacity to manage conflicting requirements and priorities
- Valid driver’s license
- Municipal works experience (e.g. reservoirs, water systems, wastewater infrastructure) is considered a strong asset
- Project management training or certification (PMP)
- Previous experience establishing or leading a branch office
- Established relationships within the Vancouver Island engineering and development community
